Biological Scientist / Engineer

Job description

Named by the World Economic Forum as one of the world’s 30 Technology Pioneers 2016, Synthace is  building a software platform, Antha, to transform the way biology is done. We're moving biology from manual processes with hand held pipettes and lab books to reproducible automated experimentation, traced samples, structured datasets and cutting-edge data analysis. This is a highly collaborative effort between software developers, biologists, engineers, mathematicians, bioinformaticians, designers and our growing list of industrial partners in the biosciences.

We are looking to recruit a passionate and enthusiastic PhD-level biological scientist or engineer, to join our world-class team and help us achieve our goal of re-defining and revolutionising Biology.

While you need to have lab-based, hands-on experience, your specific domain is less relevant than your intelligence, adaptability, communication skills and work ethic.

Working closely with our lab, business and software teams, you will be in charge of managing client projects, from development to their on-site implementation, and liaising with our diverse customer-base to help support their research needs, in particular with their use of our software platform, Antha.

The role will often be customer facing, so a willingness and ability to communicate effectively in technical, multidisciplinary situations is essential.

Your past experience in hands-on research will be crucial for engaging with and understanding our clients' specific application needs. You will have a drive to produce high-quality deliverables, and build successful business relationships with clients.

The role has an essential product development aspect to it, requiring you to further leverage your scientific knowledge and skills to help deliver value to the client and Synthace.

Our main current target market is the pharmaceutical sector, so relevant experience is a plus, particularly in discovery, development or analytics. In particular, we are interested in hearing from candidates with mammalian cell work experience.

We have multiple roles available and are open to a range of experience levels, but at least PhD level or equivalent experience is preferred. Extensive training will be provided and there will be excellent opportunities for you to expand your skill-set and progress within the company into senior positions.

This is an office-based role but occasional travel will be required to client locations.

  • Experience with developing high-throughput or optimised lab protocols
  • Demonstrated knowledge of domain-specific research and techniques
  • Up-to-date interest or activities in broader scientific world
  • Confidence to challenge our conventions
  • Ability to work independently but actively seek out resources when needed
  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Excellent documentation and reporting skills
  • Proactive and willingness to learn in a highly dynamic environment
  • Works effectively with others to deliver prioritised tasks
  • Adaptable to business needs and able to fit a generalist scientific approach
